So why have a national youth environment forum in New Zealand? how can 45 young New Zealanders solve this multitude of environmental problems? The answer to this question is contained in the wisdom of others who have gone before . Sir Peter Blake stated that "if it isn’t hard, it isn’t worth doing?" solutions to environmental problems are hard, but it is that very challenge that attracts caring motivated people to them. But what can a small group of people do?
An answer is found in the widely used quote from American anthropologist Margaret Mead (1901 - 1978): "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
Representing all 16 regions in New Zealand, the young delegates (15-16 years of age) attending the Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment are youth leaders for the environment. These young people are already showing through their actions significant leadership potential. They will be important influences in the future through their efforts as initiators, mentors, coaches and leaders of others.
The Sir Peter Blake Youth Environment Forum is an investment in these young leaders and a belief in the difference that they will make in the future. The forum is about building capability, developing human talent and encouraging them to continue on the journey of making a positive difference for the natural environment.
