As part of their studies, Year 5 and 6 students at Awapuni School did a beach clean-up for Red Socks Day on Friday, in memory of Sir Peter Blake.

The children were "pretty disgusted" at the amount of rubbish dumped on Midway Beach, said Principal Lesley Allen.

"We found a lot of very fiddly rubbish. Hundreds of cigarette butts, and the usual culprits - plastic, wire, fast food wrappers were found.

"There was also a lot of broken bottles, and the kids were pretty concerned about that."

The project was made a lot easier by Gisborne District Council, said Ms Allen.
