Sir Peter Blake Trust to further Sir Peter's aspirations by supporting Environmental Education

The award, the Sir Peter Blake Environmental Fellowship, will enable the chosen outstanding environmental educator to continue Sir Peter’s environmental focus through their own study, work experience and contact with young New Zealanders.

Sir Peter Blake was extremely passionate about and committed to delivering the message that the earth is a unique and beautiful place.   Through his work with Blake Expeditions, and as a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Special Envoy, he sought to engage young people in the environment through a series of voyages to key waterways.

His catch cry was “Good water, good life. Poor water, poor life. No water, no life”.

The Trust which has been developed in his name aims to carry on his passion to educate people about our environment, and the Sir Peter Blake Environmental Educator Fellowship is an important initiative in making that happen.

The objectives of the Fellowship are:

  • To recognise and inspire an outstanding educator to continue their environmental work.
  • To encourage student engagement and participation in their work during the term of the Fellowship.
  • To make an immediate connection between students and our natural world, and to understand the issues through both real experience and media.
  • To develop both on-line and other resources to further the work of the Trust.

With the advice and support of the Ministry of Education, it is expected that the first Fellowship will be awarded in 2005 with up to a year’s paid leave for the recipient.  The Ministry will fund the leave and the Trust will facilitate the Fellowship.
