The calling of nominations for the 2006 Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards have started with Trustees challenging all New Zealanders to recognise our outstanding emerging leaders.
The Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards have two components - the Blake Medal for outstanding leadership and six Emerging Leader Awards to recognise those who show considerable potential.
Pippa, Lady Blake, a Trustee, is enthusiastic about the awards and will travel to New Zealand to present the winners in July. “Peter and the teams he led became an extended family for Sarah-Jane, James and I,” she said. “Within these teams Peter was always supportive and enthusiastic about team members emerging as leaders themselves - and so I know he would have been excited to see the emerging leaders recognised by these awards.”
2006 is the second year for the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards. The emerging leader awards in 2005 recognised such diverse leaders as Samantha Sutherland, a 25 year old marine education advocate from Whangarei through to Mark Weldon, the 37 year old Chief Executive of the NZX.
Nominations for the awards will be considered by a ‘who’s who’ of New Zealand’s outstanding leaders, including Sir Wilson Whineray, Sir Hugh Kawharu, Eion Edgar, Ann Sherry, D John Graham, Dr Lester Levy and last year’s Blake Medal winner, Sir John Anderson.
Sir Ron Carter leads the selection panel.
“Our leaders are the ones who galvanise, motivate, encourage, coach, mentor, guide and direct us. They help us as teams and individuals to achieve worthy goals,” he said.
“I am convinced that these awards, in Sir Peter Blake’s name, will successfully promote leadership as a worthy goal, and will benefit New Zealand as a whole.”
“The Sir Peter Blake Emerging Leaders Awards enables us to encourage those we identify as having leadership potential by giving them access to appropriate mentors and experiences to add depth and breadth to their leadership capability,” he said.
