“Sir Peter Blake is one of New Zealand’s great heroes. His record on the water was remarkable, winning every major racing event in his outstanding 30 year career. But those who worked with him know that Sir Peter could have been outstanding at just about anything he set his mind to - this was evident in his successful transition from sailing hero to leading global environmental champion.
“It is his leadership qualities that this Trust will seek to foster in other New Zealanders, through the creation of two initiatives: a prestigious leadership Medal and a Leadership Awards programme,” said Ann Sherry.
The Blake Medal will become New Zealand’s ultimate recognition for outstanding leadership. It is envisaged that it will be awarded to an accomplished and nationally recognised leader and nominations will be sought from all areas of society.
The intention behind the Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards programme will be to identify and develop future leaders in the early years following the conclusion of their formal education. This will be achieved through a programme of learning - tailored to the participant’s strengths and covering a wide range of topics and experiences.
Pippa, Lady Blake, said she was delighted that the Trust would create something that draws on Sir Peter’s life story to inspire others.
“Peter would never have referred to himself as a great leader, but he was honoured that others thought this of him,” says Lady Blake. “He would be so pleased to see recognition such as this, which is based on the nomination of his peers and, consequently, a development programme that recognises that leadership evolves through practical and varied experiences,” she said.
A working group led by Sir Ron Carter is progressing the detail of both initiatives. There has been broad support for the concepts from around the country and concept refinement and implementation planning now needs to begin.
