Mark Orams, Executive Director of the Sir Peter Blake Trust, and Spirit of Adventure CEO, John Lister, announced the launch of their first joint-project, “Clean up our Coast” on Friday, 20 th August.
Each group of forty teenage trainees, participating in the regular ten-day youth development voyages on board Spirit of New Zealand, will be asked to give a little of their time ashore to collect and identify rubbish and pollution on beaches, coastline and waterways.
“With increased knowledge and understanding of the litter and debris that pollute our coastlines, we will be better able to advocate change and litter reduction in our oceans - one of Sir Peter’s greatest wishes,” says Mark Orams.
To mark the occasion, two new, six-metre cutters were christened Sir Peter and Lady Pippa on Auckland’s Princes Wharf alongside the Spirit of New Zealand by Spirit Trustees Margaret Bendall, Principal of Epsom Girls’ Grammar School and author, Tessa Duder.
“We are delighted that Lady Blake agreed to have their names on the vessels and therefore be a tangible part of the Trust that Sir Peter held in such high regard,” said John Lister.
