Sis Petter Blake Trust

Welcome to the September update.

Congratulations to Dr Simon McMillan, from Kaikorai Valley College in Dunedin, who is the Sir Peter Blake Environmental Educator Awardee for 2008.

The award, developed by the Trust in partnership with the Ministry of Education, enables Dr McMillan to be released from teaching in 2008 to pursue an environmental project. Dr McMillan will be working with host, University of Otago, on a project geared around engaging and educating people towards environmentally sustainable living, with the Kaikorai catchment as his project site.

"It is a thrill to be selected for this prestigious award. I am mindful of the legacy of Sir Peter and his commitment to environmental work. I am greatly looking forward to trying to continue such work and help others to understand how they can act to make a difference to the environment in which they live" Simon said.

Simon will provide updates throughout the year to report back on the progress he is making.

Today also marks the official launch of Good, a new bottled water product by the Good Water Company. Sir Peter's famous quote "good water, good life" is being used to market this initiative to reinforce how significant water is in sustaining quality of life.

The Trust is not a commercial partner in the product but will receive a small donation from each bottle sold. Funds raised will help support and develop the environmental programmes for young New Zealanders.

The Good Water Company is the first in New Zealand to package its water in a green bio-polymer bottle. This bottle is made from vegetable starch, a natural renewable resource (polylactic acid or PLA) that biodegrades to natural substances. However, it looks and feels just like plastic.

The Good Water Company is taking a bold step in championing this vegetable starch-derived packaging. It is an environmentally-friendly alternative and a big step in the right direction.

Visit goodwater.org.nz for more information.

Kind regards, Vicki and Laura
