New Zealand ’s Department of Conservation is responsible for endangered species (including sea-birds), marine mammals and marine reserves.
In the same way as our national parks protect important natural assets on land our marine reserves conserve marine resources for recreation, tourism, scientific research and for future generations. An increasingly important role for marine reserves is their contribution to fisheries stocks through their acting as a breeding ground and nursery. Their contribution to maintaining marine biodiversity is also significant.
