Recreational Fishing Rules and Regulations

For many boaties, catching fish and gathering of “kai moana” is an integral part of their boating experience. For some boaties it is the primary reason they own a boat!

In order to conserve fisheries so that fish remain available for all (including future generations) there are a number of rules and regulations which control recreational fishing activities. These rules and regulations are controlled by the Ministry of Fisheries and you can learn more about them on this website.

But remember, while you must follow fisheries regulations – you don’t always have to catch the maximum allowable – take only what you need and leave the rest for others including the many marine creatures who also need to feed on them.

"Having vision is not enough. Change comes through realising the vision and turning it into a reality. It is easy to espouse worthy goals, values and policies; the hard part is implementation."
