Information on Islands, Marine Reserves and Marine Mammals

New Zealand has a multitude of islands, many of which are protected public lands administered by the Department of Conservation.

While many islands are generally accessible to the public for recreation, others are sanctuaries for endangered species and landing is not allowed without a permit.

This link identifies:

  • Islands in New Zealand where you can freely land;
  • Nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries where landing is restricted;
  • Marine reserves;
  • Marine Mammal Sanctuaries.

Sir Peter Blake

"Having vision is not enough. Change comes through realising the vision and turning it into a reality. It is easy to espouse worthy goals, values and policies; the hard part is implementation."
