Care for Our Marine Environment

Our seas need or our care. It is important that we take responsibility for our actions and do what we can to look after the sea.

While there are many influences on the quality of the waters which are beyond our direct control, there are simple things that we can commit to that will make a difference. We can take responsibility for our own actions and create a better future. Here are some simple ideas that you can do at home, at your school or in your local community.

  1. Adopt a local beach or stream and improve the quality of the water there by planting, cleaning up rubbish and removing weeds and pest species.
  2. Be a part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s "Clean Up Our Coasts" programme.
  3. Remember that "outside drains should only drain rain". Outside drains at school, on roads and even at home drain to the sea - never pour anything except clean water down these drains.
  4. Learn the fisheries regulations and abide by them. Remember to only take what you need and leave something for the other creatures that need to eat it to survive.
  5. Adopt the "Boaties Environmental Code of Conduct" from the Sir Peter Blake Trust and ensure that your boating activities do not harm the environment.
  6. Think about the environment in your everyday decisions. Support companies and products that are environmentally friendly, boycott those that are not.
  7. Live by the four "Rs" - Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Recycle. Refuse to take plastic bags for packaging, reduce the amount of harmful products you use, re-use things as much as possible and re-cycle when-ever you can.
  8. Join an environmental organisation, become a champion for the marine environment - we need more of you!

"Having vision is not enough. Change comes through realising the vision and turning it into a reality. It is easy to espouse worthy goals, values and policies; the hard part is implementation."
