Seamaster arrived in Buenos Aires from the Antarctic Peninsula and Ushuaia on Saturday, 21 April, 2001 after a bumpy delivery trip that saw her hove to in storm-force winds as she approached her landfall at the entrance to the River Plate.
The Yacht Club Argentino proved perfect hosts to “blakexpeditions”, providing a berth for Seamaster in the old harbour of Buenos Aires and the use by Seamaster’s crew of all club facilities.
Two days later, Seamaster made the short journey up river to San Fernando to the home of Yacht Club Argentino where the club has provided a marina berth for the duration of Seamaster’s refit stay.
Seamaster skipper Sir Peter Blake was not only impressed with the hospitality. He was amazed at the number of familiar faces from the 1981-82 Whitbread Round the World Race when Yacht Club Argentino hosted the South American stopover at is club premises in Mar del Plata.
Seamaster will remain in San Fernando for the next few months while she undergoes an extensive refit before heading north to the Amazon for her next great adventure. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted on progress.
Seamaster’s crew, meanwhile, are taking turns at brief vacations.
Sir Peter is back in Europe attending to sponsorship and documentary matters. The documentaries are a priority with TWI ready to start cutting the three one-hour television programmes that will track Seamaster’s voyage into waters where nobody has been before, filming and recording natural and wildlife events that are attracting quite a bit of attention around the world.
"Having vision is not enough. Change comes through realising the vision and turning it into a reality. It is easy to espouse worthy goals, values and policies; the hard part is implementation."
